Gearing Up for the Semester
We are still fighting for full steps.
Thousands of CSUEU members have signed the petition to demand full implementation of steps. If you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for? Sign here.
Members across the state are preparing to take action during move in days on campus.
We plan to distribute flyers, display banners, and educate new students and parents about the valuable roles campus staff have in students’ lives.
CSUEU members support student success. The full implementation of steps will allow staff to dedicate ourselves to the mission of the CSU without struggling to survive. Take action this semester to win full steps.
North Bay state legislators held a third public forum on Sonoma State’s future, specifically how a $45 million funding boost from the state will be used to “grow and stabilize SSU’s key programs,” according to state Senate President Mike McGuire. The CSU also announced it was matching the state, bringing the total of potential new funding to $90 million.
CSUEU Steward Catherine Bañuelos, a Community Partnerships Coordinator, was invited to be a panelist and took the opportunity to stress the importance of having represented staff at the table as the campus plots its future. After all, exclusion of workers’ voices is what led to the current disaster after campus administrators announced drastic deletions of programs and personnel at the start of the year.
The forum was livestreamed and is viewable here.
“I work to bring together classroom, campus and community. My deep ties with our campus and the community empower me to know how important a healthy and thriving SSU is to our region. Without engaging the campus and greater community, we will not have success, and we will not turn our campus back into the thriving center of education and innovation that it should be.” – Catherine Bañuelos, SSU
As Sac State prepares to usher in a new academic year, University management made the decision to move forward with layoffs on Aug 1. The affected employees are nine Community Service Specialists (CSS) who were notified they were being laid off – via email.
The manner in which these employees were informed was not consistent with HR protocols for best practices. It was callous, inhumane, and failed to uphold basic standards of dignity. But the shortsighted decision also leaves significant negative impacts on the entire campus community given that the targeted workers provide campus patrols, public safety support, and assist in special campus events.
Our Union is demanding the University provide documentation that shows where there is a funding gap. CSUEU members provide essential frontline services. We reject arbitrary decisions that cut positions without any plan for how student needs will be met.
🎉Custodial Workers at Monterey Bay Win Union and Join CSUEU! 🎉
Employees at UG2, a custodial contracting service used by CSU Monterey Bay, have organized themselves into a union and overwhelmingly voted to join CSUEU!
For too long, the CSU has used contractors to avoid providing union-negotiated benefits to workers on our campuses. This victory is part of a strategy to reverse this trend of contracting out and to increase our power on campus.

This victory would not have been possible without support from CSUEU members at CSU Monterey Bay.
If you know of any non-union workers on your campus, fill out this form to help us get in touch with them and expand our campus power. This is our 4th union election at a campus auxiliary this year, and our 4th win!
Student Assistant Sick Leave
Student assistants need access to sick leave. Students should not have to choose between earning a living and recovering from illness. This issue impacts all of us – sick leave helps our workplaces stay healthy and reduces transmission.
CSU confirmed to us in writing that they are not giving student workers access to sick leave. State law requires all employers to provide minimal sick leave coverage to employees. CSU is not providing this minimal coverage of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. We are taking action to challenge the CSU.
Do you work with any student assistants? Fill out this form to help us identify the next generation of student worker leaders, and win a strong first contract for student assistants.
Legislative Committee Meeting
You are invited to join our next Legislative Committee meeting! At this meeting, we will share updates on the state budget, decide on legislative priorities, and discuss endorsements for upcoming elections. We need your participation for our political power!

Save Labor Studies at SFSU!
The Dean of the Business school at SFSU has proposed to eliminate the major in Labor Studies at San Francisco State University. The elimination of the major would undermine the ability of the Labor Studies faculty to educate, inspire, and train the next generation of labor and social justice leaders and organizers at a critical time in our state’s, and the nation’s, politics.
The Labor Studies major at SFSU is the only such program at a four-year university in Northern California, and one of only two in the entire CSU system.
Read and sign the petition to save Labor Studies at SFSU!
